The Impact of Formal Organizational Socialization Tactics of Academic Advisors and Their Reactions to Various Formal and Informal Tactics
Miller, Jennifer Leigh Noble
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Kent State University
Academic advisors play a critical role in students' success, persistence, and graduation in higher education. As in any organization, individuals are socialized through training and onboarding processes to learn how to engage as functioning members of the organization through formal and informal socialization practices at the organizational or unit level. This explanatory mixed methods study will evaluate the socialization practices of academic advisors who are also members of NACADA, the Global Community for Academic Advising, in the early stages of their academic advising career. Utilizing an adaptation of the Socialization Tactics Inventory (Jones, 1986), the research will utilize exploratory factor analysis to determine a factor structure for the socialization of academic advisors across varying institutional types. Additional qualitative findings will be collected and organized to understand better academic advisors' perceptions of their organization and unit training. Finally, qualitative data were transformed to clarify the quantitative results further. Recommendations will be provided for human resource professionals in a higher education context, academic advisors, academic advising administrators, and NACADA.
