Mergers in Higher Education: Collaborative Value Creation among Public HEI's in the United States
Kelli J. Coller
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Edgewood College
Mergers among public HEI's in the United States are occurring with regular frequency, but with little research to understand the impact that mergers have on value outcomes at the micro, meso, and macro level. Previous research suggests that there needs to be a more robust way of assessing merger outcomes both quantitatively and longitudinally worldwide. The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent value is co-created through mergers among public HEI's in the U.S from 2005 to 2017. This study utilizes longitudinal data from the U.S. Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Integrated Post-secondary Education Data System (IPEDS) to conduct a quasi-experimental difference in difference hierarchical multiple linear regression for three research questions: 1) To what extent do predictor categories impact the co-creation of value over time of merged institutions in comparison to non-merged institutions? 2) Is there a difference in the co-creation of value of like or unlike merger combinations over time 3) Is there a difference in the co-creation of value of mergers that were an involuntary decision versus mergers that were a voluntary decision over time?Applying Austin & Seitanidi's (2012a,2012b,2014) CVC framework, the research design includes PSM, PCA and hierarchical multiple linear regression models to answer the research questions. The results for research question 1 show that differences in value exist between merged and non-merged institutions. Research questions 2 and 3 showed no significant results. This study calls for similar studies to be conducted both within and outside of the United States and the continued need to expand upon the CVC framework.
