The teaching of history in school can be justified only if what is taught offers its recipients an introduction to historical thinking. This article attempts to identify briefly some of the more important elements in historical thinking, and to consider their implications for school teaching. (Editor/RK)

Discusses three areas related to history of education: (1) comments on significant changes in the academy and what it means to historians; (2) reviews shifts in wider society that transformed society's perceptions of history; and (3) reflects on changing ways historians study and approach educational history. Discusses the implications of postmodernism for the field of the history of education, specifically from the point of view of theory and methodology.
