Building Comprehensive High School Guidance Programs through the Smaller Learning Communities Model
Harper, Geralyn
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Walden University
Despite many reform initiatives, including the federally funded initiative titled the Smaller Learning Communities' (SLC) Model, many students are still underexposed to comprehensive guidance programs. The purpose of this mixed method project study was to examine which components in a comprehensive guidance program for the learning academies at a high school in Georgia are most valued by personnel. Both Brown and Lent's social cognitive career theory and the American School Counselors Association (ASCA) developmental theory guided the study. A sequential explanatory strategy was employed to address the components that should be included in a comprehensive guidance program for the SLC academies at the participating high school. A Likert-type survey was developed using competencies from the ASCA's model, with survey items grouped into the 3 domains of academic, personal/social, and career development. A convenience sample of 40 academy personnel was surveyed and interviews were conducted with 4 academy coordinators. Mean score responses were used to rank the importance placed on the various counseling components and interview data were coded using emerging themes for substantiation. Key findings yielded that academic, career, and personal/social development components were most valued. Consequently, a guidance and advisory curriculum guide was created to emphasize these components. This study will promote positive social change by supporting educators' greater use of comprehensive guidance programs within the SLC model. Such preparations will also enable students to make positive and sustained contributions to the global society. Higher learning organizations will benefit by receiving more students who are academically and socially prepared for studies at the collegiate level.
