Page, Roger A.; Handley, George W. – Psychology: A Journal of Human Behavior, 1989
Developed Rapid Induction Susceptibility Scale using Chiasson induction to produce hypnotic susceptibility scale which is quickly administered and yields scores comparable to the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (SHSS:C). Found that validation study with college students (N=100) produced a correlation of .88 with the SHSS:C and…

Kunzendorf, Robert G. – Omega: Journal of Death and Dying, 1986
When 50 college students were hypnotized and instructed to rate their "subconscious" fears of death, they expressed greater fear of inexistence than when they were awake. Findings suggest that the subconscious fear of inexistence is a primary phenomenon, from which religious and other death-dying behaviors may be derived. (Author/NRB)

Kirsch, Irving; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1984
Examined the relationship between expectancy and suggestibility in hypnosis as a function of type of induction (N=100). Results showed subjects were able to predict their responses to a cognitive skill induction with great accuracy but were not very accurate in predicting responses to a hypnotic trance induction. (JAC)

Sapp, Marty; Hitchcock, Kim – 2002
The purpose of this study was to assess the reliability of the General Dissociation Scale with African American college students, and provide additional data on how to assess hypnotizability with these students. Two-hundred and two undergraduate African American college students participated in this study. Students completed the HGSHS:A, a measure…

Vickery, Anne R.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1985
Compared a traditional trance hypnotic induction and a cognitive skill induction using a within-subjects design with college students (N=40). The skill induction enhanced responses to suggestions and produced marginally significant increments in behavioral responses when preceded by the trance induction, but there were no significant differences…

Council, James R.; Kirsch, Irving – 1983
Scales assessing absorption, or a predisposition to become highly involved in sensory and imaginative experiences in non-hypnotic contexts, have predicted hypnotic responsivity as well. To examine the effects of expectancy on hypnotic responding by measuring expectancies at different points in the hypnotic experience, and to test for possible…

Horevitz, Richard P. – 1985
Hypnosis is an increasingly popular clinical intervention. The number of training courses in hypnosis is growing each year. Research on hypnosis training appears to show that limited exposure to training, as is typical in the common 3 to 5 day format of mass training, produces limited results. Only when training is extended over time do the…

Fillmer, H. Thompson; And Others – 1980
A study was undertaken to investigate the effects of one hypnotic session on the reading improvement of high-risk college students with low aptitude scores and histories of failure in academic situations. The 27 students in the experimental group participated in a one-hour hypnosis session in which they were given a procedure to follow for…

Eskridge, Veronica L. – 1975
This study was designed to investigate the effect of a placebo (sugar pill) accompanied by suggestions that the pill would either (1) improve performance as a stimulant or (2) cause a deterioration in performance as a depressant when the performance in question was the subjects' complex reaction time to a light stimulus. The Harvard Group Scale of…

Carrese, Marie A. – Journal of Humanistic Education and Development, 1998
Addresses the problem of stress and outlines the steps for self-hypnosis as an effective method of teaching inner-city college freshmen ways of coping with the pressures of higher education. The described method can be used in numerous settings with all populations. An appendix provides the Stress Identification and Evaluation Form. (Author/MKA)

Coyle, Robert B.; Church, Jay K. – 1983
The authoritarian/permissive dimension of hypnosis refers to the manner in which hypnotic suggestions are phrased. In the authoritarian mode suggestions imply the subject is under control of the hypnotist; permissive suggestions are phrased to emphasize the subject's own thinking. To compare the permissive suggestions of the Creative Imagination…

Parker, Wayne D. – 1992
This study evaluated personality variables that underlie hypnotic susceptibility. It was correlational, did not require ongoing contact with participants, and included a validation study as an integral component. The subjects were 359 college students (250 in the original sample and 109 in the cross validation study) taking undergraduate courses…

Comins, Jeffrey R.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1975
Subjects were pretested on objective and subjective responses to test suggestions of the Barber Suggestibility Scale. After being exposed to one of three treatments--experimenter modeling, hypnotic induction, or control--each subject was retested. Experimenter modeling was as effective as hypnotic induction in enhancing responsiveness to test…
