Charting the Course: Institutional Characteristics and Their Role in Predicting Primary Modality Enrollment at Select Community Colleges

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of West Georgia
Notable gaps in academic literature exist as it pertains to understanding the influence of institutional characteristics on modality enrollment patterns in the community college environment. Given these gaps, this study examined whether institutional control, locale, and size could serve as predictors of whether a community college is more inclined to offer primarily distance education, traditional face-to-face education, or a combination of both. A multinominal logistic regression analysis revealed that institutional control, locale, and size are significant predictors of primary modality enrollment at community colleges. Specifically, public institutions and private not-for-profit institutions were more likely to offer distance education than mixed education; however, only public institutions were more likely to offer distance education over face-to-face education. Additionally, community colleges that were classified with as city were more likely to offer distance education compared to mixed education or face-to-face education. Lastly, small community colleges (those with under 1,000 students) were more likely to offer mixed education. These findings have important implications for community college administrators, as they can use this information to make strategic decisions about modality enrollment and better serve their students and institutions.
