Petrarca, Anthony E.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1971
It is shown that this new automatic indexing technique can be applied with the same effectiveness shown earlier for indexes derived from words in titles or title-like phrases; the basic difference being that linear notation symbols rather than words are used as the indexing units. (17 references) (Author/NH)
Descriptors: Automatic Indexing, Chemistry, Coordinate Indexes, Indexes

Robinson, F. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1973
To improve access to the recent Chemical Abstracts,'' a cumulative quarterly index, based on the keyword phrases, has been produced in microfilm form. The index is available soon after the end of each quarter. Abstract titles are included in the index, thus increasing its value as a working tool. (4 references) (Author/SJ)
Descriptors: Chemical Nomenclature, Indexes, Microfilm

Montgomery, Ruth Reinke – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1973
The goal of this study was an appraisal of indexing coverage for the interdisciplinary field of toxicology. Information of research significance was limited to primary literature, defined as published documents containing original data from experimental work or case studies. (6 references) (Author/NH)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Databases, Evaluation, Indexes

Hosoya, Haruo – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1972
Although the topological index does not uniquely correspond to the individual structure of a graph, it roughly represents the topological nature of the graph. Examples are given for using the topological index as a first sorting device for coding and retrieving structures, especially of fused polycyclic systems. (14 references) (Author/NH)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Graphs, Indexes, Information Retrieval

Granito, Charles E.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1972
The computerized conversion of Wiswesser Line Notations to Ring Codes, using a two-part approach, and the set of computer programs generated for the conversion of ring systems are described. (9 references) (Author)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Computer Programs, Data Processing, Indexes

Rosen, Carol Z. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1973
An experimental procedure for indexing physical materials based on simple syntactical rules was tested by encoding the materials in the journal, Applied Physics Letters,'' to produce a materials index. The syntax and numerous examples together with an indication of the method by which retrieval can be effected are presented. (5 references)…
Descriptors: Indexes, Indexing, Information Retrieval, Information Storage

Wichterle, Ivan – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1974
Automatic processing of the bibliography on vapor-liquid equilibrium data is done by means of a specially developed mnemonic coding system. (Author/JB)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Codification, Computers, Data Processing

Kiehlmann, Eberhard – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1973
Science Citation Index'' and several new Chemical Abstracts''' indexes are discussed as effective tools for retrospective literature work and a comparison is made of the features of Chemischer Informationsdienst,'' Index Chemicus,'' Chemical Titles,'' and Current Contents'' as the main sources of current chemical information. (9 references)…

Clinging, R.; Lynch, M. F. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1973
A program is described which identifies functional group interconversion reactions, hydrogenations, and dehydrogenations in a data base containing structures encoded as Wiswesser Line Notations. Production of the data base is briefly described. (17 references) (Authors)
Descriptors: Chemical Nomenclature, Data Processing, Databases, Indexes

Friedlander, Janet – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1973
Literature sources for environmental chemistry are detailed, such as data services, abstract and index services, periodicals, books, handbooks, and bibliographies. (33 references) (Author)
Descriptors: Abstracts, Bibliographies, Books, Chemistry

Skolnik, Herman – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1972
The Multiterm system is shown to be a unique concept for producing a multilingual index via computer processing. The new concept has significance for international cooperative programs. (6 references) (Author/NH)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Data Processing, Indexes, Indexing

Buchanan, Oliver H.; Vaillancourt, Pauline M. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1972
The complex and time-consuming task of preparing an acronym directory with fully documented entries for the library, information, and computer science fields was appropriately aided by methodology of these fields. The input record is constantly available for searching despite dispersal of the component 3 X 5 card records. (1 reference) (Author/NH)
