Chen, Ye-Sho; Leimkuhler, Ferdinand F. – Information Processing and Management, 1987
This analysis of Zipf's law uses an index for the sequence of observed values of the variables in a Zipf-type relationship. Three important properties relating rank, count, and frequency are identified, shapes of Zipf-type curves are described, and parameters of the Mandelbrot-Zipf law are discussed. (Author/LRW)
Descriptors: Indexing, Mathematical Models, Predictor Variables, Statistical Distributions

Mahapatra, M.; Biswas, S. C. – Library and Information Science Research, 1985
Two hundred journal articles related to fields of taxation, genetic psychology, and Shakespearean drama published from 1970-1980 were analyzed and PRECIS input strings were drawn. Occasions when input string and index entries looked incomplete and unexpressive after losing context of document are provided with solutions. Role operator schema is…

Sievert, MaryEllen; Verbeck, Alison – Online Review, 1987
A comparison of ERIC and LISA (Library and Information Science Abstracts) indexing of the three journals--Online, Online Review, and Database--revealed some differences but more similarities in number of terms per article and concepts per article. A vocabulary which distinguished the field of online searching did emerge. (Author/EM)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Databases, Indexing, Online Searching

Craven, Timothy C. – Information Processing and Management, 1988
Presents a methodology for extending string indexing from index display production to the provision of descriptor phrases for term proximity searching. Objectives of the extension are discussed, and an illustration of the use of an existing string indexing system for this purpose is given. (14 references) (CLB)
Descriptors: Computational Linguistics, Computer Software, Indexing, Online Searching

Svenonius, Elaine – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1986
The issue of free-text versus controlled vocabulary is examined. The history of the issue, which is seen as beginning with the debate over title term indexing in the nineteenth century, is reviewed and questions not satisfactorily addressed by previous research are raised. (Author/EM)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, History, Indexes, Indexing

Dale, Doris Cruger; Wilson, Betty-Ruth – Library Resources and Technical Services, 1986
An annotated bibliography of materials published during 1984-1985 on subject analysis covers classification, indexing, subject headings, and thesauri. The major theme is the need for improved subject analysis and the new computer technology is seen as the way to achieve it. (EM)
Descriptors: Annotated Bibliographies, Cataloging, Classification, Indexing

Chandrasekharan, N.; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1987
Demonstrates the use of a directed graph model as a tool for finding desirable minimum vocabularies to be used in indexing and information retrieval. The basic algorithm is outlined, possible enhancements to the model are discussed, and further research questions are suggested. (Author/CLB)
Descriptors: Definitions, Dictionaries, Indexing, Information Retrieval

Markey, Karen; Miksa, Francis – Library Resources and Technical Services, 1987
This review of the 1986 literature on subject access covers: (1) general works; (2) organization and history; (3) classification systems; (4) classification theory and method; (5) Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH); (6) authority control through LCSH; (7) subject searching through LC-based, assigned subject headings; and (8) other subject…

Olson, Nancy B.; Swanson, Edward – Library Resources and Technical Services, 1987
This review of the 1986 literature on the processing of audiovisual materials covers five topics: (1) standards; (2) selection; (3) cataloging; (4) classification and subject access; and (5) preservation. Fifty-nine references are listed. (MES)
Descriptors: Cataloging, Indexing, Library Material Selection, Library Standards

Azubuike, Abraham A.; Umoh, Jackson S. – International Library Review, 1988
Describes the concept of maximum indexing, a system aimed at achieving maximum recall and maximum precision in computerized information retrieval. The indexing strategies used to achieve maximum indexing and the problems that arise are discussed. (9 references) (CLB)
Descriptors: Databases, Indexing, Information Retrieval, Online Systems

Kwok, K. L. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1985
Introduces a new model of viewing documents based on citing-cited relationship between them. Using Bayes' decision theory, it is shown how source document may be indexed and weighted by relevant cited document features, corresponding to one pass relevance feedback Model 1 (probabilistic indexing) or Model 2 (probabilistic retrieval). (24…
Descriptors: Citations (References), Feedback, Indexing, Information Retrieval

Rousseau, Ronald – Information Processing and Management, 1985
Presents a modification function for weights of descriptors for documents in fuzzy retrieval systems which includes some desirable properties that are lacking in the model proposed by Choros and Danilowicz in their study on relative indexing. (MBR)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Indexing, Information Retrieval, Online Systems

Humphrey, Suzanne; Miller, Nancy E. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1987
Describes the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Indexing Aid Project for conducting research in knowledge representation and indexing for information retrieval, whose goal is to develop interactive knowledge-based systems for computer-assisted indexing of the periodical medical literature. Appendices include background information on NLM…
Descriptors: Expert Systems, Indexing, Information Retrieval, Medicine

Ramesh, R.; Drury, Colin G. – Information Processing and Management, 1987
Provides overview of Ergonomics Abstracts Retrieval System (EARS), an online bibliographic search and retrieval system in the area of human factors engineering. Other online systems are described, the design of EARS based on inverted file organization is explained, and system expansions including a thesaurus are discussed. (Author/LRW)
Descriptors: Human Factors Engineering, Indexing, Online Searching, Online Systems

Kwok, K. L. – Information Processing and Management, 1988
Describes a method for enhancing the subject index terms of a document with title terms from cited, citing, and cocited documents. Experimental results of this methodology are presented, and responses to criticisms of this strategy are made. (40 references) (CLB)
