The Simulated Machine Indexing (SMI) method of generating index terms is studied in relation to the manner in which it evaluates index terms. (Author)

Described is an operating system for scanning, bulletin production and indexing which is very economical in the use of time. One typing onto offset masters is used to produce bulletins, slips for customers' personal files and for the library index. Indexing is done during scanning, not as a separate activity.
