An educational model for implementation of a health promotion program for Indochinese refugees in the United States is presented in this paper. The objective, as described by the model, is to train individuals within the refugee community so that they, having information about health, can assist peers to seek and maintain better health in their homes, with their families and in their community. The model, complete with measurable objectives and varied learning opportunities, mainly includes content which would not require literacy skills. Topics include the development of a health promoter program, self-care, and specifics such as public and environmental health, child care, first aid, dental care, sexual health, and family planning. Suggested resources are provided to assist the implementer. The model, it is said, reflects a health promotion concept which may be widely applicable to a variety of age groups in a variety of settings. Five appendices include the following: (1) Sample Assessment Interview; (2) Partial List of Asian Resources; (3) Validation Instrument Letter; (4) List of Experts to Validate the Model; and (5) The Educational Model, which includes a justification, content outline, implementation scheme, in-service orientation scheme, curriculum evaluation plan, curriculum plan with content outline and related learning opportunities, and a bibliography.
