Ye Li; Viridiana L. Benitez – Child Development Perspectives, 2025
In infancy, sensorimotor capacities directly affect learning. Although developmental scientists have studied the link between sensorimotor capacities and learning, their work has focused primarily on a narrow window of time connecting just two domains. In this article, we propose that considering concurrences across multiple time points and…

Amy Armstrong-Heimsoth; Abbey Monroe; Camryn Cupp; Nancy Potter; Mark VanDam; Beate Peter – Journal of Occupational Therapy, Schools & Early Intervention, 2024
Speech problems affect about 66% of children with classic galactosemia (CG), but limited evidence is reported on early motor and sensory motor development in this at-risk population. Research has been focused on speech and language development, leaving a paucity of data on motor and sensory differences. This paper describes preliminary data…

Streri, Arlette; Spelke, Elizabeth S. – Cognitive Psychology, 1988
Four experiments studied the perception of the unity and boundaries of objects by 88 4-month-old infants who manipulated them out of the visual field. Infants perceived the unity/boundaries of these objects by detecting the motion patterns they themselves produced. Discrimination between motion patterns transferred from touch to vision. (SLD)

HELD, RICHARD; WHITE, BURTON L. – 1966
FINDINGS WERE REPORTED ON THE ROLE OF EXPERIENCE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THOSE SKILLS NECESSARY FOR VISUALLY DIRECTED REACHING. THE SKILLS INVOLVED WERE THE ORIENTING, ACCOMMODATING, AND PURSUIT RESPONSES OF THE EYES, ALL OF WHICH ARE ACHIEVED DURING THE FIRST HALF-YEAR OF LIFE. Richards, John E.; Rader, Nancy – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1981
Two experiments tested the effects of crawling-onset age, amount of crawling experience, and testing age on avoidance of the deep side of a visual cliff apparatus by human infants. Crawling-onset age disciminated between infants because crawling during the tactile phase interferes with later visual control of locomotion. (Author/RD)

Schmuckler, Mark A.; Fairhall, Jennifer L. – Child Development, 2001
Three experiments explored 5- and 7-month-olds' intermodal coordination of proprioceptive information produced by leg movements and visual movement information specifying these same motions. Results suggested that coordination of visual and proprioceptive inputs is constrained by infants' information processing of the displays and have…

Harrison, Janet; And Others – Journal of Special Education, 1987
The developmental model of communication growth is often the most appropriate framework for determining intervention goals with handicapped children. An integration of published literature describing the developmental progression of sensory, motor, and social abilities is provided as an intervention framework for developing communicative abilities…

Ogura, Tamiko – 1987
The development of and relationship between early language, symbolic play, sensorimotor skills, and social development were examined in a longitudinal study conducted in Japan with two young autistic males who were observed from the approximate ages of 2 to 4 years in clinic, day care, and home settings. One child acquired speech; the other did…

Johnson, Scott P.; Aslin, Richard N. – Developmental Psychology, 1995
Examined perception of object unity in partial occlusion in 72 infants. Recorded how long subjects looked at a display of complete and incomplete rods. In test and control conditions, infants looked longer at broken rods than at complete rods, suggesting that infants' cognitive, visual, or attentional skills may be insufficient to support…

Curcio, Frank; And Others – 1969
This paper describes the purposes and procedures of a longitudinal study designed to: (1) relate mother-infant interaction patterns to infant age, sex, and social class; (2) relate mother-infant interaction patterns to infant sensory-motor development; and (3) to examine the relationship between infant sensory-motor development and infant sex and…

Wright, Charlene; And Others – 1970
This paper describes the development of a program which uses paraprofessional home visitors, known as Child Development Trainers, as disseminators of information necessary for the growth and development of the fetus and young infant. These Trainers serve a low income population. Weekly home visits were designed to aid the expectant mother to…

Grace, Janet; Suci, George J. – 1981
A study is undertaken to determine whether the nonlinguistic priority of the agent of an action facilitates the comprehension of word reference.
