Kim, Chai – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
Because of an absence of theory, rules and conventions for thesaurus construction and maintenance, an investigation of how thesauri are actually updated was conducted. Two concepts crucial to any theoretical foundation of thesauri and two techniques for systematic updating of a thesaurus are presented for consideration. (46 references) (Author/KE)

Yovits, M. C.; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1981
This second of two related articles by the same authors describes a simulation model which permits examination of the interrelationship between information and decision making for a variety of situations. Prototype experiments which place human decision makers in an interactive decision-making mode are also described. Five references are cited.…

Lanigan, Richard L. – 1991
For most of the 20th century, Roman Jakobson's name will have been synonymous with the definition of communication as a human science, i.e., communicology. Jakobson is the modern source of most of what communication scholars theorize about and practice as human communication, and he will be the source of how communication scholars shall come to…

Wright, H. Curtis – 1983
Postwar librarians have sacrificed the humanistic basis of librarianship and regard the use of science in librarianship as a settled issue. American librarianship is currently dominated by the physical thinking of scientific systems theory, which includes Bertalanffy's general system theory, Wiener's cybernetics, and the Hartley-Shannon theory of…

MEASUREMENT CRITERIA ARE DEVELOPED FOR THE QUANTIFICATION OF THE FUNCTIONAL LOAD OF THE PHONEMES OF A LANGUAGE. THE CONCEPT OF FUNCTIONAL LOAD OR YIELD, FROM CERTAIN THEORIES OF LINGUISTIC CHANGE, STATES THAT SOME CONTRASTS BETWEEN THE DISTINCTIVE SOUNDS OF A LANGUAGE DO MORE WORK THAN OTHERS BY OCCURRING MORE FREQUENTLY AND IN MORE LINGUISTIC…

Levine, Michael M.
Recent events in behavior modification stimulated application of communication theory to teacher behavior and classroom management. For the purposes of this present investigation, it was assumed that criteria of effective communication are highly dependent on the phenomena of redundancy and consistency, which are both of major importance in any…

Ostrom, T. M.; And Others – 1972
This pair of papers share the focus of determining how differential exposure to information influences attitude formation and change. The first paper deals with the question of how differing amounts of information (set size) affect attitude formation. Set size effects in impression formation have not been obtained when examined in between-subjects…
