Amick, Daniel James – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
Scientific elitism must be viewed as a multidimensional phenomenon. Ten variables of elitism are considered and a principal components factor analysis is used to scale this multivariate domain. Two significant dimensions of elitism were found; one in basic and one in applied science. (20 references) (Author)

Small, Henry – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
A new form of document coupling, co-citation, is defined as the frequency with which two documents are cited together. Clusters of co-cited papers provide a new way to study the specialty structure of science. They may provide a new approach to indexing and to the creation of SDI profiles. (12 references) (Author/SJ)

Thompson, Charles W. N. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
Abstracts of a document have been generally considered a valuable aid to the reader in quickly determining the relevance of a document. A test of this hypothesis in three military laboratories was not supported. (71 references) (Author/SJ)

Shera, Jesse H. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1971
In the explorations of the scientific aspects of the information problem, information scientists must not forget the human equation which is the most important one of all. (Author/MF)

Beck, Leonard N. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1971
Impediments to Russian transfer of information include lack of invisible colleges; absence of preprints; difficult telephone communication; delays in the procurement of foreign literature; failure of Soviet libraries to mechanize library processes; and the absence of narrowly specialized information centers intensively exploiting computers for…

Alo, Richard A.; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1987
Presents a mathematical model of a decision maker subject to goal uncertainty which shows that a dominant course of action will always emerge. The theory of multivalued functions is used to express goal uncertainty, and a specific example is described to provide insight into how the procedure works in practice. (Author/EM)

Katzer, Jeffrey; Moell, Patricia – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
There is evidence which suggests that users' attitudes toward on-line interactive retrieval systems may be multi-dimensional. Because this earlier work was based upon factor analysis of the data, it was essential that a replication be attempted. To this end a previous study with a new population of users was repeated. Thompson, Harold B. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
The base'', means of access, indexing, storage, input costs and retrieval are discussed as factors that must be considered in comparing information systems. (2 references) (Author/KE)

And Others; Mick, Colin K. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1980
Proposes a management-oriented model for describing and studying information behavior and details the testing of the resulting hypotheses through the use of a database describing the information-related attitudes and behaviors of 560 scientists and engineers. (FM)

Vaughan, Liwen Qiu; Tague-Sutcliffe, Jean – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1997
Investigates the feasibility of using LISREL (LInear Structural RELations), a computer program that analyzes covariance structures and describes the relationships among all the variables by a group of linear equations, to determine the impact of information, relative to other factors, on development of the small manufacturing business sector in…

Kim, Chai; Shin, Eui Hang – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1977
Modern systems theory is applied in constructing a recursive, multivariate casual model for an analysis of intercounty variations in public library output and use. (Author)

Swanson, Rowena W. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
An important factor to be considered in applying clustering techniques to information storage and retrieval problems is the use to be made of the resultant groupings. An examination of cluster criteria differentiation as a function of purpose may be fruitful in the exploitation of clustering techniques. (12 references) (Author/KE)

Zaltman, Gerald; Kohler, Barbara Marie – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1972
The general finding is that task and socioemotional information flowed relatively freely across geopolitical boundaries within the three general geopolitical subsystems represented in the sample of theoretical high energy physicists. (29 references) (SJ)

Hall, Homer J. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1981
Considers the differences between information user groups with regard to characteristic patterns in the use of information and the dimensions of value by which users evaluate and analyze information. Twenty references are cited. (FM)

Kleyle, R.; de Korvin, A. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1990
Presents a formal method for making important one-shot decisions based on an elimination process which uses sequentially acquired information and is based on a conditional belief structure. The routine updating of the structure as information accumulates is based on Dempster's rule of combination. (15 references) (EAM)
