Developing Leaders in Higher Education: An Assessment of the Wilmington University Leadership Institute
Karen Ann Sheats
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Providing employees of all classifications with the opportunity to develop as leaders is a critical component in the successful attainment of organizational goals and competitive organizational advantage. Effective leadership development programs offer the tools, experiences, and resources needed to cultivate the important skills and abilities that all leader employees must possess in order to create a strong organizational culture in support of identified missions, visions, and values. The present study adds to existing research by providing an evaluation of a grow-your-own leadership development program implemented at Wilmington University, a private, non-profit university. The purpose of this study was to assess the perceived outcomes of this grow-your-own leadership development program according to participants, as well as university executives. Post-participation survey data were accessed and executive team interviews were conducted and assessed to measure the variables of the study, thus answering the research questions. The results of the study revealed significant benefits of the existing Wilmington University grow-your-own leadership development program and brought to light innovative and actionable recommendations to enhance the development of leaders in the current educational environment.
