Womack, David – Mathematics in School, 1978
The author argues on theoretical grounds that not all "logical" pre-number activities are equally relevant for numeracy, and concludes with a practical suggestion for the kind of activity which does have particular relevance. (MN)

Barr, David C. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1978
This study compares three methods of introducing two-digit numeration. It is concluded that teachers should build on the preschool exposure children have in counting past ten, rather than have children begin by counting out groups of tens and ones and only later in the process use the normal number names. (MN)

Trimble, Harold – Mathematics Teacher, 1979
The use of a multiple approach using both geometric and algebraic contexts is suggested in teaching concepts. Several examples are given including area and multiplication, length and number, and functions and power. (MP)

Flinter, Paul F. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1979
Difficulties encountered by a dyscalculia child are discussed and remedial activities suggested. Disturbances discussed are verbal, visual-spatial, reading and writing numbers, operations, understanding concepts, and place value. (MP)

Liedtke, W. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1978
Thinking strategies that are related to counting are discussed and activities that are necessary for the understanding of number and counting are suggested. (Author/MP)

Huff, Sara C. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1979
A set of square counters is described as a simple way to introduce new concepts and as a concrete way for students to learn. (MP)
Descriptors: Concept Formation, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics, Instruction
Plunkett, Stuart – Mathematics Teaching, 1979
An argument is given for providing children with visual images for number concepts that they can internalize and which can aid understanding of numbers and their relations. (MP)

Tucker, Karen L. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1978
This discussion of the mathematical potential of classroom events gives many examples of incidents that can be used for learning about topics such as one-to-one correspondence, counting, sets, ordering, time, fractions, money, shape, estimation, measuring, volume, area, number operations, and graphs. (MP)

Hutton, Joyce – Mathematics Teaching, 1978
The development of numeracy is discussed as being an important aspect of the learning process. (MP)

West, Tommie A. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1978
Several problems are identified: place values, time, even numbers, fractional parts, and temperature. Specific teaching suggestions are discussed. (MP)

West, Mike; Haar, Ken – Arithmetic Teacher, 1978
One student's project involved a contest of guessing how many peanuts were in a 100-pound bag. His teacher briefly reflects on the wide range of guesses and students' concept of large numbers. (MP)

Shumway, Richard J. – 1972
The role of negative instances in the acquisition of the mathematical concepts of distributivity and homomorphism was examined. Two treatment levels for distributivity (positive instances and positive and negative instances) and the same treatment levels for homomorphism were crossed to form a 2 x 2 factorial design with 23 subjects per cell.…

Novillis, Carol F. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1976
The fraction concept was analyzed to yield 16 subconcepts which are hypothesized to be hierarchically ordered. This ordering was tested using subjects in grades 4 through 6, and 18 of 23 dependencies hypothesized were confirmed. (SD)
