Albrecht, Bob – Calculators/Computers Magazine, 1978
Number patterns obtained by squaring numbers in a sequence are discussed. A BASIC program for use with TRS-80 is given. (MP)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Computers, Instruction, Pattern Recognition

Strangman, Kathryn Besic – Mathematics Teacher, 1974
Ways of finding the sums of some interesting sequences of numbers are discussed. Finding the patterns creates a challenge, but the patterns are not too difficult for average pupils to discover. Mathematical induction can then be used to prove the formulas. (LS)

Loomis, Alden H. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1979
Some patterns resulting from certain operations on numbers are discussed, analyzed, and explained. A method for predicting the outcome of these operations for any number is developed.

Cacha, Frances B. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1978
Patterns and relationships found in the multiplication table of the numbers zero through nine are discussed as a means to helping students understand certain concepts. (MP)

Sgroi, James T. – Mathematics Teacher, 1977
Patterns that appear in the repeating digits of a decimal are used to help convince students that any infinite repeating decimal can be written in the form of a rational number. (JT)

Parkerson, Elsa – Arithmetic Teacher, 1978
Playing with number patterns can lead students to discover some divisibility tests. (JT)

Smith, Lyle R. – Mathematics Teacher, 1977
Some mathematical patterns are explored by visualizing and counting line segments, squares, cubes, and relationships between them. (JT)

O'Brien, Thomas C.; Shapiro, Bernard J. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1977
Elementary School Teachers were instructed on finding number patterns in a figure in one of three groups: individual discovery, group discovery, and expository. They were tested for recall, retention, and transfer. The expository groups did better on recall, but group discovery was more effective for retention and recall. (SD)

Duncan, David R.; Litwiller, Bonnie H. – Mathematics Teacher, 1976
Patterns emerging when two-digit numbers in various bases are operated on by squaring and summing the digits. (SD)

Ouellette, Hugh; Gannon, Gerald – Arithmetic Teacher, 1979
Properties of a given array of numbers are discussed and some sample activity cards involving discovery of number patterns are presented. (MP)

Descriptors: Elementary School Mathematics, Geometric Concepts, Geometry, Instruction
Clark, Jean – Mathematics Teaching, 1975
A learning activity relating modular arithmetic to patterns of figures determined by points equally spaced around a circle is described. (SD)

Bright, George W. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1978
Using the two posters in this article, students are to search for patterns as a way of counting different types of squares and cubes obtained from a larger square or cube that is printed on the outside edge or surface. (MP)

Ewbank, W. A. – Mathematics in School, 1975
A game involving operations on whole numbers, observing patterns in the relationships between operands and results, and seeking problems yielding various numerical solutions is described. (SD)
Descriptors: Basic Skills, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics, Experiential Learning
