Physician Assistant Program Characteristics and Interprofessional Education Practice in Higher Education

Interprofessional collaboration enhances healthcare teamwork and patient care. Interprofessional education (IPE) situates pre-professional learners in collaborative contexts that simulate their future working environments. Healthcare educators have made IPE a goal. However, barriers exist to creating interactive experiences for students matriculated in varied programs. The purpose of this study was to identify program characteristics that predict IPE practice and explain how those characteristics may contribute to the development of synergistic relationships across different healthcare education programs, despite the barriers. This concurrent explanatory mixed methods study utilized data derived from the most recent Physician Assistant Education Association Didactic Survey. Multiple regression analysis was performed in an attempt to identify institutional predictors of IPE practice in PA programs (n = 239). Additionally, a convenience sample of PA educators contributed qualitative data via semi-structured interviews to inform the interpretation of the quantitative results (n = 7). No predictive relationships were found between IPE ratio of the curriculum and academic housing, academic health center, cohort size, or community size. Although the quantitative data did not provide any insight into program characteristics that may facilitate IPE, interview data showed that any program or institutional barriers to IPE practice were enthusiastically overcome by motivated educators. The findings from this study inform the identification of synergies for IPE practice. Programs and institutions increase IPE practice experiences for their students through the motivation of educators and leaders. Ways to facilitate more collaboration among healthcare are discussed within the context of the diversity of PA program characteristics.
