The Internet of Things (IoT) and Internet-connected technologies are becoming more and more prevalent in our houses today, with over 31 billion connected devices all over the world. This qualitative exploratory study looks at ten participants' home devices and protection measures. The participants were all considered the head of the household and had control of their home cybersecurity protection measures. The protection motivation theory shows that we will protect ourselves if we are aware of the risks. Many Internet-connected and IoT-connected devices are not manufactured with a security mindset. The study explored common devices and protection measures used in homes today. The study examined what risks and vulnerabilities individuals are aware of or willing to accept to implement these new technologies. The study also explored the participant's willingness to implement the devices if the absolute risk is known or understood. Lastly, it investigated education as the best home cybersecurity protection method versus the different technical protection measures or lack thereof. The findings of this exploratory study show our current weakness with home cybersecurity protection measures and ways to implement better cybersecurity practices for the future.
