Tests the hypothesis that a response to a given feedback statement will be its reciprocal. In Phase 1, a pool of feedback statements was written and scaled along dimensions of power (dominance-submission) and affect (affection-hostility). The relative influence of counselor status on subjects' perceptions of the counselor was examined. Counselor behavior produced a main effect on each of the six dependent measures, while counselor introduction produced a main effect on only Counselor Competence and Counselor Comfort. Reactions of observers, classified as either high or low in self-disclosure flexibility, to high and low behavioral samples of self-disclosure to a stranger were examined. Results suggest self-disclosure flexibility reflects perceptual awareness of social-situational norms governing the appropriateness of self-disclosing behavior. (Author)

Systematic observation methods were used to investigate the nature of communication in a cross-sectional study of 80 dating and engaged couples that were grouped into dating stages of various degrees of commitment. A group of college males who had reported themselves unable to interact with women were contacted and asked to record every interaction for a week. Following this period a series of behavioral tests was given. After pretesting shy subjects were randomly assigned to a control group or a treatment group. Treatment improved social skills.
