Donald J. Harris
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville
The purpose of this study was to examine implementation of a social/emotional learning program being implemented at my school, while focusing on staff and student perceptions with the positive and negatives of the overall program. This mix methods action research study utilized a student survey to uncover student perceptions for the quantitative descriptive portion of the study. The qualitative portion of the study involved data collection involved staff interviews and researcher journal notes. Student survey results indicated positive perceptions regarding the program as a whole and the amount of care received from staff, conversely a negative student perception was found in the care students receive from each other. The qualitative results of the uncovered some interesting findings: (a) the staff feel the program is needed and liked the program and its resources (b) staff feel the program improves caring (c) staff believe the program helps students with social/emotional development (d) staff feel that remote learning due to COVID-19 impacted the program both positively and negatively. Implications of the study highlighted a need to increase professional development with social/emotional development and social justice reform and also suggests for both state and local policy makers to consider the effects of COVID-19 with SEL program delivery and practitioner practice.
