The Relationship between Teacher Autonomy, Job Satisfaction, Profession Retention, and Experience
Brittany T. Cox
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trevecca Nazarene University
This quantitative study analyzed the relationship between teacher autonomy and teachers' intentions to remain in the profession, job satisfaction, and years of experience. All participants completed the Continuing Validation of the Teaching Autonomy Scale, Teaching Satisfaction Scale, and answered questions concerning the demographics. When considering the results of the statistical tests, the researcher found that teacher autonomy had a positive effect on teacher satisfaction and intention to remain in the profession. The more experience earned, the more likely teachers experienced moderate to high autonomy, satisfaction, and intention to remain in the profession. This study led to a recommendation to focus on a larger and more diverse sample. Additional studies may include looking into urban only, suburban only, and rural only.
