The Transition of Spiritually Plateaued Leaders from the "Doing" to the "Being" Stage through Life Journey Discernment in the Korean-American Immigrant Church
Jong Dae Choi
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
This dissertation explores the transformational paradigm shift in spiritually stagnated leaders of Korean-American immigrant churches. It addresses the issue of spiritual stagnation, which affects 25% of Christians in over 2,500 churches, leading to burnout and emptiness. The Korean-American church's collectivistic, hierarchical, and high-context cultures hinder individual spiritual formation. The study examines four developmental faith theories and introduces the Spiritual Life Map Journey, a framework designed to help the doing-staged leaders transition from the doing to the being stage. The study suggests that church leaders create a safe and transparent environment for self-regulated, self-discursive, paradoxical, and communal transformation.
