Borjas, George J. – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1987
An analysis of 1980 census data reveals that immigrants tend to substitute for some labor market groups and complement others. The effects of immigrant supply on the earnings of native-born men is small. However, increases in the immigrant supply have a sizeable impact on the earnings of immigrants themselves. (Author/CH)

Mantell, Edmund H. – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1973

Finegan, T. Aldrich – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1981
Examines recent trends and cyclical changes in the number of discouraged workers and other persons outside the labor force who report wanting regular jobs. Both the incidence of discouragement and its sensitivity to labor market conditions vary widely across demographic groups. (Author/CT)

Wachter, Michael L. – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1980
A labor supply forecast is developed for the U.S. labor market in the 1980s, focusing on the effects of the low fertility rates of recent years. That forecast is then compared with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projection of employment demand in the next decade. Effects of illegal immigrants are also discussed. (CT)

Vroman, Wayne – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1990
Analysis of Current Population Survey and Social Security data through 1985 did not support hypothesis that increase in median earnings of Black men after 1964 reflects labor force withdrawal of large numbers of low-income Black men who received government transfers. Of the total gain in relative earnings from 1964-85, only 14 percent can be…

Sloan, Frank A. – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1975
This study analyzes determinants of two dimensions of the supply of physicians' services: the number of hours physicians work per week and the number of weeks they work per year. Data indicate that physician supply in the short run is affected by physician's nonprofessional income, age, sex, and employment situation. (Author/JB)

Walsh, William D. – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1977
Develops a theory to integrate the effects of three factors--the relative supply elasticities of skilled and unskilled labor, adjustments in skilled labor hiring standards, and the presence of fixed employment costs for skilled labor--on the response of skill differentials to demand variation. (Editor/LAS)

Schoeplein, Robert N. – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1977
Shows that skill differential in manufacturing, when measured on a national level, has remained surprisingly stable over the 1952-73 period, in spite of its history of narrowing throughout the first half of the century and severe pressures of inflation since 1965. (Editor/LAS)

Gustman, Alan L.; Steinmeier, Thomas L. – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1991
A simulation of the effects of proposed changes in Social Security rules (elimination of the Retirement Earnings Test and an increase in the Delayed Retirement Credit) for men working after retirement age demonstrated a rise in long-run costs by $43 billion in taxes and an increase of only 3.5 percent in the supply of older workers. (Author/SK)

Thornton, Robert J.; Weintraub, Andrew R. – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1979
This study analyzes the effects that state licensing requirements have had on barber supply and on new entrants into the trade over the period 1969-1973. The authors found that the minimum education requirements, barber school hours required, and months of apprenticeship required have had little or no significant effect. (MF)
Descriptors: Barbers, Certification, Educational Needs, Labor Supply

Scheffler, Richard M.; Iden, George – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1974
The study measures the significance of the health variable in a model explaining variations in labor supply. Results indicate that the disability variable substantially increases the explanatory power of the conventional model of labor supply, which otherwise overemphasizes education and family status. (Author/MW)

Leuthold, Jane H. – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1978
Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of women between 1967 and 1971, the author concludes that tax increases have a negative effect on the labor supply of married working women. Among the factors examined were presence of preschool children, husband's approval, home ownership, health, and educational background. (MF)
