Tsaparlis, Georgios; Gorezi, Marianna – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
Students should enjoy their laboratory classes and for this purpose a project-based activity is added to a conventional physical chemistry laboratory. Students were given project work instead of conventional experiment and then they had to make progress in the project according to instructions and then carry out experiments related to the project.

LoPresto, Michael C.; Jacobs, Diane A. – Physics Education, 2007
In this exercise the US Standard Atmosphere is used as "data" that a student is asked to model by deriving equations to reproduce it with the help of spreadsheet and graphing software. The exercise can be used as a laboratory or an independent study for a student of introductory physics to provide an introduction to scientific research…

Bardar, Erin M.; Brecher, Kenneth – Astronomy Education Review, 2008
In this article, we present an overview of a suite of light and spectroscopy education materials developed as part of Project LITE (Light Inquiry Through Experiments). We also present an analysis of how introductory college astronomy students using these Project LITE materials performed on the Light and Spectroscopy Concept Inventory (LSCI)…

Denny, Michael; Chennell, Frank – Educational Studies, 1986
Examines views, attitudes and feelings of high school pupils about their school science practicals (labs) via letter-writing and picture-drawing. Concludes that while students generally like practicals, they view them more as a means of confirming theory rather than an open investigation or true experiment. (JDH)

Hofstein, Avi; Lunetta, Vincent N. – Science Education, 2004
The laboratory has been given a central and distinctive role in science education, and science educators have suggested that rich benefits in learning accrue from using laboratory activities. Twenty years have been elapsed since we published a frequently cited, critical review of the research on the school science laboratory (Hofstein & Lunetta,…

Gung, Benjamin W.; Taylor, Richard T. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
An experiment in the parallel synthesis of azo dyes that demonstrates the concepts of structure-activity relationships and chemical diversity with vivid colors is described. It is seen that this experiment is suitable for the second-semester organic chemistry laboratory and also for the one-semester organic laboratory.

Leenson, I. A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
On equilibrium properties of aqueous solutions of sulfuric acid, Julius Thomsen has marked that the heat evolved on diluting liquid sulfuric acid with water is a continuous function of the water used, and excluded absolutely the acceptance of definite hydrates as existing in the solution. Information about thermochemical measurement, a discussion…

Heinson, C. D.; Williams, J. M.; Tinnerman, W. N.; Malloy, T. B. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
The role of ethanol O-d in nullifying the deuterolysis may be demonstrated by determining that transesterification of methyl acetoacetate of the ethyl ester occurs as well as deuterium exchange of the five acetoacetate hydrogens. The significant acidity of the methylene protons in the acetoacetate group, the efficacy of base catalysis, the role of…

Saucedo, Laura; Mink, Larry M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
A multisection undergraduate laboratory involving the microscale synthesis and spectroscopic analysis of unmetalled porphyrins and their corresponding metalloporphyins is described. The microscale synthesis involving the isolation of the metalloporphyrins as solids and their corresponding (super 1)H NMR spectra are presented.

Payne, Richard; Edmonds, Michael – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
A new undergraduate laboratory experiment suitable for demonstrating some key techniques used in natural products chemistry is described. A laboratory experiment is developed which in the process of extracting shikimic acid from star aniseed exposes students to a number of important experimental techniques.
