Han, Chao – Interpreter and Translator Trainer, 2023
Aptitude testing is used to select candidates with the greatest potential for professional interpreter training. Implicit in this practice is the expectation that aptitude test scores predict future performance. As such, the predictive validity of score-based inferences and decisions constitutes an important rationale for aptitude testing.…

Godfroid, Aline; Kim, Kathy MinHye – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 2021
This study addresses the role of domain-general mechanisms in second-language learning and knowledge using an individual differences approach. We examine the predictive validity of implicit-statistical learning aptitude for implicit second-language knowledge. Participants (n = 131) completed a battery of four aptitude measures and nine grammar…

Li, Shaofeng; DeKeyser, Robert – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 2021
This article discusses the conceptualization, measurement, and validity of a recently emerged construct in the field of second language acquisition (SLA)--implicit language aptitude (alternatively "implicit aptitude"). Implicit aptitude is a set of cognitive abilities that enable learners to make unconscious computations of the…

Teimouri, Yasser; Tabandeh, Farhad; Tahmouresi, Somayeh – Modern Language Journal, 2022
Defined as a combination of perseverance and passion for long-term goals, grit has been hypothesized to be as important as talent in determining the success of students, adding incremental predictive validity for achievement criteria above and beyond natural or inherent ability. In this study, we tested this hypothesis by comparing the effects of…

Li, Shaofeng; Qian, Jiancheng – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 2021
This study investigates the validity of syntactic priming as a measure of implicit language aptitude. Syntactic priming refers to the tendency to reproduce a linguistic structure due to a previous exposure to the structure. The validity of the construct was verified by collating evidence for divergent validity--whether it is dissociable from…

Li, Shaofeng – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 2016
A meta-analysis was conducted to examine the construct validity of language aptitude by synthesizing the existing research that has been accumulated over the past five decades. The study aimed to provide a thorough understanding of the construct by aggregating the data reported in the primary research on its correlations with other individual…

Lee, Joanne – Applied Psycholinguistics, 2011
This paper investigated the predictive ability of expressive vocabulary size and lexical composition at age 2 on later language and literacy skills from ages 3 through 11. Multivariate analysis of covariance was performed to compare 16 language and literacy outcomes between children with large expressive vocabulary size at 24 months (N = 1,073)…

Gliksman, L.; And Others – Canadian Modern Language Review, 1979
Presents results of an investigation into the test-retest reliability of the short form of the Modern Language Aptitude Test, with Canadian samples. (AM)
Descriptors: Aptitude Tests, French, Grammar, Language Aptitude
Fiks, A. I. – 1968
The language training program for Peace Corps participants is investigated. The objectives were: to investigate the validity of the Modern Language Aptitude Test (MLAT) for predicting end-of-training Foreign Service Institute (FSI) language proficiency; to discover the relative difficulty of various target languages; to develop tentative…

Raile, Frederick N. – 1980
A study of the intellectual talents involved in learning a foreign language compared the composite predicted score of high school students on the Pimsleur Language Aptitude Battery with selected factor scores on the Structure of Intellect-Learning Abilities Test to determine whether any of the factors correlate highly with foreign language…

Mabbott, Ann Sax – Foreign Language Annals, 1995
In response to a previous article, this article addresses issues raised about the identification of subjects as learning disabled and the use of the Modern Language Aptitude Test as a predictor of success. (JL)
Descriptors: Identification, Language Aptitude, Learning Disabilities, Predictive Validity

Curtin, Constance; And Others – Modern Language Journal, 1983
A study was undertaken of the predictive validity of the Pimsleur Language Aptitude Battery at a university high school. Correlations of foreign language final grades and total scores on the Pimsleur battery are presented. Reliance on the battery score as a simple predictor of foreign language achievement is not recommended. (MSE)

Harper, Frank B. W.; Kieser, W. E. – Canadian Modern Language Review, 1977
A description of the EMLAT, its content, norms used, types of questions and results. Statistical tables are included. The conclusion is that the EMLAT has predictive validity for achievement in French language whether the method used is traditional or audio-lingual. The first two subtests contribute most as predictors. (AMH)

Hagtvet, Knut A.; Hagtvet, Bente E. – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1990
The discriminant validity of two subscales of the Reynell Developmental Language Scales (RDLS) was investigated using data from 225 children given the RDLS at age 4 and the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities at age 5. Results support the hypothesis; the RDLS scales measure distinct but correlated language abilities. (SLD)

Gardner, R. C.; Tremblay, Paul F.; Masgoret, Anne-Marie – Modern Language Journal, 1997
Investigates numerous individual difference measures to determine their underlying dimensions, to contrast their predictive validities and to evaluate their contributions in a causal model of second language acquisition. Findings indicate that substantial links exist among affective measures and achievement. (56 references) (Author/CK)
