Frey, Eberhard – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1975
This article is intended to help teachers of German classes explain gender-number-case inflection. As a nominal is expanded from pronoun to noun phrase, inflections of the noun and adjectives relieve the burden of distinction from the determiner, increase the number of inflectional forms and provide redundancy for easy communication. (CHK)
Descriptors: Adjectives, Applied Linguistics, German, Grammar

Lee, D. A. – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1975
A comparison is made of two different approaches to the treatment of modals in the framework of a transformational grammar--that of Seuren, who analyzes modals as "operators," and that of the generative semanticists who take them to be "higher verbs." Implications for language teaching are discussed. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Deep Structure, Language Instruction, Linguistic Theory, Semantics

Cant, J. Paul N. – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1976
Is phonetics essential in the learning of pronunciation? It is taught in the hope of aiding muscular-motor function and is therefore essential. The problem arises then of designing a course which supplies the learner with all relevant phonetic information during pronunciation teaching in the most effective way. (CFM)
Descriptors: Curriculum Design, Grammar, Language Instruction, Motor Reactions

Berman, Ruth Aronson – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1979
Discusses the need for both a "rule of thumb" grammar and more thorough grammatical rules in second language teaching. (AM)

McTear, Michael F. – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1979
Reviews aspects of Halliday's Systemic-Functional Grammar, emphasizing language functions, modality vs modulation, process types, transitivity, information distribution, and cohesion. Implications for language teaching are discussed. (AM)

Chu, Chauncey C. – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1978
Proposes an approach to contrastive linguistics which takes into account syntax and semantics, and discusses the role of such an approach in explaining surface structure differences between English and Chinese sentences of the type: "He is a good pianist" and "I have a bad knee." (AM)

Walmsley, John B. – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1970
Attempts to apply the techniques and ideas of transformational grammar to the teaching of translation. A three-step procedure in which in the original text is reduced to based and embedded sentences, translated and reconstituted in the target language is outlined. Stylistic aspects of translation are also discussed. (FWB)
Descriptors: Deep Structure, Interference (Language), Language Instruction, Language Styles

Atkinson, Rodney – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1977

Chandrasekhar, A. – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1978
A brief discussion of the role of contrastive linguistics and transformational generative grammar in studying transfer and interference in language learning. The base language is not necessarily the mother tongue. It is the language known by the learner which most closely resembles the new language being learned. (AMH)
Descriptors: Bilingualism, Contrastive Linguistics, Error Analysis (Language), Interference (Language)

Van Ek, J. A. – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1971

An exercise developed to aid an aphasia patient in relearning rules governing phonological changes in English was later used in a pilot study attempting to teach English pronunciation to French speakers by rule rather than by rote. The method used and the results obtained are reported. (RM)
