Gutschow, Harald – Unterrichtspraxis, 1978
Various ways of incorporating area studies into the curriculum are examined. The three approaches mentioned in the title are found impractical. The best approach for the foreign language teacher is to put the language first, and bring in area study items where appropriate. (WGA)

Putnam, Constance E. – Unterrichtspraxis, 1978

Gutschow, Harald – Unterrichtspraxis, 1977
Currently some skepticism exists concerning the value of area studies--especially the concept of "national traits." Also, the alleged motivational value may be offset by the sacrifice of language-learning time. German language teaching has followed the U.S. lead; American teachers might profit from German experience. (Text is in German.) (WGA)
Descriptors: Area Studies, Cultural Education, Cultural Traits, German

Descriptors: College Language Programs, Curriculum Development, German, Higher Education

Scher, Helene – Unterrichtspraxis, 1976
This article claims that a distinction should be made between the teaching of a foreign language and the teaching of foreign language literature. Three principles are suggested for restructuring the curriculum in foreign language departments taking this distinction into account. (TL)
Descriptors: College Language Programs, Higher Education, Language Instruction, Language Learning Levels

Schmidt, Hugo – Unterrichtspraxis, 1978
Describes a one-semester course whose purpose was not to include as many items as possible, but to try to treat adequately a few carefully chosen "theme areas", e.g., The Middle Ages, from Cloister Culture to the Decline of Chivalry, and The Growth of Urban Culture. (WGA)
Descriptors: Area Studies, Course Descriptions, Cultural Background, Cultural Context

Liedloff, Helmut – Unterrichtspraxis, 1975
Discusses the necessity of incorporating cultural themes in the German curriculum of American colleges from the beginning level on. These themes should be contemporary, should help the student contrast the foreign culture with his own and help him see language as a system of symbols. (Text is in German.) (TL)
Descriptors: College Language Programs, Course Content, Cultural Awareness, Cultural Context

Peacock, Dennis E. – Unterrichtspraxis, 1978

Descriptors: Area Studies, Course Content, Cultural Awareness, Cultural Education

Johnston, Otto W. – Unterrichtspraxis, 1978

Descriptors: Administrative Policy, Budgeting, Educational Finance, Financial Policy

Elling, Barbara – Unterrichtspraxis, 1977
There is a need for expanding offerings in foreign language instruction to reach different age and interest groups, prepare teachers, and educate students for positions in business, industry, and government. For students, foreign language study could be combined with the study of another field. (SW)
Descriptors: Career Opportunities, Career Planning, College Language Programs, German

Reschke, Claus – Unterrichtspraxis, 1977
