Oerberg's "Lingua Latina" was first used at Columbus Academy in 1973 as a textbook for teaching Latin to beginning eighth grade student. Student interest and enrollment increased, and students achieved greater facility with Latin than under more traditional methods. (RM)

Informational texts are useful for teaching fundamental linguistic structures, because their stylistic variables can be ignored, and because they provide information about aspects of the world which the student will encounter in literary texts. Cautions against a "synonymic" or "structural-semantic" approach to constructing texts and in reading them. Concern over matching each foreign word with a native-language word results in limiting the vocabulary of the text and the student's knowledge. Speech-act theory suggests a more flexible approach. In Finland, German ranks third among foreign languages taught, and is declining. To encourage its study, one should avoid using long and uninteresting textbooks. As examples of good texts, W.
