Final Devoicing of Fricatives in English.
Veatch, Thomas C.
A study of speakers of a range of English dialects was conducted to investigate some influences on the pattern of phonetic final devoicing of phonologically voiced fricatives and affricates. With the help of spectrographically examined tape-recorded speech derived from sociolinguistic interviews of the subjects, the study examined seven English dialects and a small amount of data from two non-native-English speakers. It was found that the differences among speakers in overall likelihood of devoicing did not appear to be attributable to regional dialect differences. It was concluded that the final devoicing of phonologically voiced fricatives is a pan-English phenomenon. (GLR)
