Reports on an experiment, conducted on ten children who misarticulated /s/, and designed to survey the effect of consonant context on misarticulation. Suggests that a context-sensitive model of phonetic performance is needed to account for variation in correct /s/ production. (Author/AM)

Adults and 4-year-old children were tested to determine whether the children were able to decode sets of familiar minimal pairs as well as adults. They listened to words spoken in a normal voice and a whisper. Indications were that the 4-year-old's perceptual mastery of English phonology is not yet complete. (SW)

The magnitudes and patterns of two-point difference limens (DL) of the tongue were studied in children with and without articulation errors. Many children with misarticulation of /r/ had DLs that differed in magnitude and pattern from those of children with normal articulation and those with misarticulations of /s/. (NCR)

This is a report on an investigation of the correct production of /s/ in spontaneous speech of children. A greater incidence of incorrect production was found for pre-boundary /s/ than for /s/ in other lexical positions. Lexical position is related to articulatory inconsistencies in child speech. (SC)

Twenty-four normal, misarticulation-free second-grade children participated in tasks designed to test their ability to perceive misarticulations in contextual speech. Results indicate that children are able to successfully identify sentences in which misarticulated words occur in addition to specific misarticulated words within sentences. (SW)
