Martin, Maryanne – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Two experiments are described. One measured performance of subjects on pairs of concurrent verbal tasks, monitoring sentences for certain items while reading. Secondary task performance combined with a primary task is proportional to its performance in isolation. The second experiment checked certain results of the first. (CHK)

Lenskyj, Helen – TESL Talk, 1980
Results of a 10-item oral language test presented only orally, orally with pictures, and orally with concrete aids replicate earlier research findings showing that bilingual children manipulate language more easily than unilinguals. Unilinguals' errors were due to incomplete development while bilinguals' were caused by that and first-language…

Weismer, Susan Ellis; Plante, Elena; Jones, Maura; Tomblin, Bruce J. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2005
This study used neuroimaging and behavioral techniques to examine the claim that processing capacity limitations underlie specific language impairment (SLI). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to investigate verbal working memory in adolescents with SLI and normal language (NL) controls. The experimental task involved a modified…

Gullo, Dominic F. – 1981
Two levels of stimulus condition were used to determine whether or not the amount of salient information contained in the perceptual stimuli accompanying orally presented "wh-questions" (those including the concepts who, what, where, when, how and why) facilitates children's comprehension. Conditions varied in terms of the number of…

Spoehr, Kathryn T. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Three experiments use a tachistoscopic word recognition task to investigate how skilled readers covert visual input into a speech-related or phonological code during reading. (Author/NCR)

Gullo, Dominic F. – 1981
Preschool children's responses to "wh-questions" (those including the concepts who, what, where, when, how, and why) were studied in order to determine the influence of socioeconomic status (SES) on frequency of correct and incorrect answers. Investigation focused on three questions: (1) When a response to a wh-question is incorrect,…

Surian, Luca – Journal of Child Language, 1995
Investigated the relationship between children's failures to produce unambiguous utterances and the mental effort demands in children (ages five, six, seven, and nine years), using finger-tapping and message production tasks, separately and simultaneously. Findings suggest that the relative effort requirements of communication decrease with…

Trosberg, Anna – Journal of Child Language, 1982
Investigates the linguistic and cognitive aspects of the mastery of the time conjunctions "before" and "after" by young children. (EKN)

The Effect of Foreign Language Study on Verbal Ability in the Native Language: A Review of Evidence.
Eddy, Peter A. – 1978
This paper examines some experimental evidence relating to the influence of second language learning on native language performance, including results from elementary school Latin programs, research on bilingualism and intellect, and elementary school programs in modern languages. Some studies of Latin FLES programs show that specially designed…
