Dawe, Lloyd – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1983
Findings of a study of bilingual Punjabi, Mirpuri, Italian, and Jamaican children aged 11-13 growing up in England are reported. First-language competence was found to be an important factor in children's ability to do mathematical reasoning in English as a second language. Knowledge of logical connectives appeared crucial. The possible effects and importance of student ability in language use and mathematical reasoning are reviewed. Data from the National University of Lesotho on incoming science students indicated that the relationships between language proficiency and mathematics achievement are quite complex. (MP)

A test of logic using implicational and disjunctive sentences was given to Chinese and English speakers. No differences were found on "if-then" sentences, but differences were found on "or" sentences. (MNS)

Results of a comparison of Papua New Guinea bilingual and monolingual students' (n=232) mathematics achievement indicated that bilingual students competent in both languages scored significantly higher on two different types of mathematical tests than both low-competent bilingual students and monolingual students.
