This paper reports on attempts to predict the aptitude of nine-year-old German children for learning English. Subjects participated in a pilot study in which the aptitude and achievement of three classes were compared. Findings support continued use of objective tests of language proficiency in predicting academic achievement. (CHK)

A study which presents evidence against the relevance of age and innate linguistic talent as significant variables in language learning. A report on an experiment testing the hypothesis that reading comprehension in a foreign language is learned more quickly and improved if reading instruction follows instruction and practice in listening comprehension. Results indicate that there is a high degree of transfer from listening to reading comprehension. A bibliography is provided. (AMH)
