Singapore Language Enhancer: Identity Included
Wee, Desmond
Language and Intercultural Communication, v9 n1 p15-23 Feb 2009
This article explores the rhetoric of the four official languages (English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil) in Singapore and the domestic aversion towards Chinese "dialects" and colloquial "Singlish". The "Speak Mandarin Campaign" alongside the "Speak Good English Movement" represent a display of intercultural and transcultural ideologies which reinforce and negate cultural boundaries through seemingly contradictory discourses. In the presentation of an identity under the name of multiculturalism, deeper questions emerge as to the identification of language through its imagination and production. The paper will use historical and textual analysis to tackle the representation of constructed identity. (Contains 1 table.)
