Bloom, Sarah E.; Iwata, Brian A.; Fritz, Jennifer N.; Roscoe, Eileen M.; Carreau, Abbey B. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2011
We evaluated a trial-based approach to conducting functional analyses in classroom settings. Ten students referred for problem behavior were exposed to a series of assessment trials, which were interspersed among classroom activities throughout the day. Results of these trial-based functional analyses were compared to those of more traditional…

Daly, Edward J., III; Wells, Nikki J.; Swanger-Gagne, Michelle S.; Carr, James E.; Kunz, Gina M.; Taylor, Ashley M. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2009
The current study examined the accuracy of the multiple-stimulus without replacement (MSWO) preference assessment for identifying preferred common classroom activities as reinforcers with children with behavioral disorders. The accuracy of predictions from the MSWO regarding high, medium, and low stimulus preference was tested by providing…

Cammilleri, Anthony P.; Hanley, Gregory P. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2005
The present study evaluated the effects of a lag differential reinforcement contingency on 2 students' activity selections using reversal designs. Results showed that the lag contingency was responsible for promoting increased novel selections, engagement in diverse activities, and greater progress with respect to programmed academic activities.

Heal, Nicole A.; Hanley, Gregory P. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2007
Preschool teachers rely on several strategies for motivating children to participate in learning activities. In the current study, we evaluated the effectiveness of and preference for three teaching contexts in which embedded, sequential, or no programmed reinforcement was arranged. The embedded context included highly preferred teaching…

Reid, Dennis H.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1985
A teacher training and supervision program for increasing the involvement of severely handicapped adolescents and adults in functional educational tasks was accompanied by large increases in functional tasks in three classrooms. In two subsequent experiments, surveys provided social validation for the criteria for functional versus nonfunctional…

Tustin, R. Don – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1995
Using an ABAB design, two procedures for requesting a change of activity were compared for their effect on the stereotypic behavior of a man with autism. One procedure requested immediate change of activities, whereas the second procedure gave advance notice of a change. Less stereotypy occurred when advance notice of change was given. (Author/DB)

Foster-Johnson, Lynn; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1994
Curricular activity preference was determined for 3 students (ages 9-15) with moderate intellectual disabilities. Subsequent evaluation of the influence of activity preference on student behavior revealed that preferred activities were associated with reduced levels of problem behavior and increased levels of desirable behaviors. (Author/JDD)

Ndoro, Virginia W.; Hanley, Gregory P.; Tiger, Jeffrey H.; Heal, Nicole A. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2006
The current study describes preschool teacher-child interactions during several commonly scheduled classroom activities in which teachers deliver instructions. An observation system was developed that incorporated measurement of evidence-based compliance strategies and included the types of instructions delivered (e.g., integral or deficient…
