The Competency-Based Preservice Teacher Preparation Program of the Early and Middle Childhood Education Department, University of Louisville.
Powers, F. Randall; Dunlap, William P.
The Phase Program of the Undergraduate Teacher Preparation Curriculum at the University of Louisville (Kentucky) is described. Developed by the Early and Middle Childhood Education Department, the program incorporates the study of theory and methods with concurrent field experience. The program is divided into four phases covering a period of four semesters. Phase I includes the course "Introduction to Education" and an initial field observation experience. It is during this phase that students decide to make formal application to the teacher education program or not. In Phase II, students take methods courses in children's literature, language arts, and mathematics, engage in two full days per week field experience, and undergo any remedial work recommended in early screening. Phase III students participate in social studies, science, and reading methods courses, and continue two days of field work per week. Phase IV students teach five days a week for sixteen weeks, assuming responsibility for all classroom activities, and participate in weekly seminars on educational philosophy. Detailed descriptions of each program phase, budget requirements, and evaluation design are presented. (MJB)
