Activities for Teaching the U.S. Constitution in the Elementary Grades.
Corbin, Denee J.
Designed to work with and be integrated into the existing curriculum, this learning packet contains activities that encourage discussion and critical thinking by students about the U.S. Constitution. The first activity teaches fundamental principles of government while the second asks students to explain how the Constitution was written through rewriting its preamble in their own words. The third activity encourages critical thinking about the protection of civil rights by presenting different situations and having students decide how people are protected by the Bill of Rights. Activity four promotes writing and thinking skills by having students express opinions on the secrecy of the Constitutional Convention by writing letters to a newspaper. The fifth activity describes life in 1787 through a fictitious press conference with Dolly Madison. Other activities (crossword puzzles, word searches, and a trivia game) teach important terms and facts associated with the Constitution. A bibliography is included. (SM)
