Bricks for Building Empathy: An Action Research Study Assessing the Impact of Robotics on Elementary Students' Empathy towards Individuals with Disabilities
Emily A. Yow
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of South Carolina
Schools and businesses are realizing the importance of empathy and the role it plays in their success. The purpose of this mixed-methods action research is to assess the impact of robotics on fifth grade students' empathy towards people with disabilities. This study aimed to answer the following research questions: (1) What is the effect of using robotics on fifth grade students' empathy towards people with disabilities? (2) How do fifth grade students perceive the intervention's impact on their empathy? (3) How does the intervention impact fifth grade students' perceptions of people with disabilities? Fifth grade students at Burton Academy within the researcher's classroom will participate in disability scenarios in which they must program a Lego Boost Robot to assist a person with a physical disability achieve a given task. In order to assess the impact of this innovation, quantitative data will be collected through the use of a pre- and post-survey using The Basic Empathy Scale. In addition, qualitative data will be collected through individual interviews and student response journals. The data will be analyzed using a paired sample t-test for the pre-and post-survey, and an inductive/thematic analysis of the interview transcripts and student response journal entries. Quantitative and qualitative data will be triangulated to strengthen and support the study's conclusions. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
