Robots Climbing Mountains: A Scientific Challenge?
Cronquist, Björn; Fridberg, Marie; Redfors, Andreas
Teaching Science, v68 n3 p15-19 Sep 2022
Coping with a virtual and abstract reality has become part of everyday life. Therefore, perceptions of what will constitute everyday life experiences for future generations are next to impossible to predict. One way of preparing young children for such a future is the implementation of teaching towards digital competence in curricula around the world. The designing of activities that are supposed to foster development of digital competence include the use of robot kits. The example presented in the article is from the botSTEM project, where learning in digital technologies and STEM is combined, made use of an educational robot called 'BlueBot'™. This article describes a programming activity called "climbing the mountain." The ambition in designing the activity was to engage the need for scientific concepts in understanding the behaviour of the robot. Programming a multi-step sequence that takes the robot up a hillside was expected to bring concepts like gravitation and friction into play. The botSTEM project focused on children aged 4-8 years and hence the activity of robots climbing the mountain was performed by this age group. However, it can be adjusted for older students.
