What Works Clearinghouse Rating

Truscott, Stephen D.; Frank, Alicia J. – Journal of School Psychology, 2001
Examines two samples of students classified as learning disabled (LD) for evidence of the phenomenon known as the Flynn effect (FE). Results indicate that the FE does affect Wechsler IQ and component scores of students classified as LD. Suggests that LD classification may be substantially impacted by the FE over the life of an IQ test version.…

Smith, Teresa C.; Smith, Billy L. – Psychology in the Schools, 1986
WISC-R (Wechsler Intelligence Scale in Children-Revised) Verbal and Performance scores were correlated with WRAT-R Wide Range Achievement Test-Revised scores. The verbal score was found to predict reading, spelling, and arithmetic. The performance score did not add significantly to the predictions. Results were consistent with earlier studies.…

Simons, Marc R.; Goh, David S. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
Correlations between McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities and teachers' ratings of academic achievement were investigated. McCarthy Scales are useful in predicting achievement of normal children, but further research is needed with learning disabled students. Use of teachers' rating scales with low functioning children is discussed in light of…

Leonard, Faith C. – Learning Disabilities Research and Practice, 1991
Data from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R), grade point average (GPA) after 2 semesters of full-time enrollment, and selected student characteristics were compared for 49 learning-disabled college students. WAIS-R results were not generally predictive of academic success, although Comprehension and Similarities subtests…

Avant, Anna H.; O'Neal, Marcia R. – 1986
A public school district in Alabama uses the Otis Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) in place of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (Revised) (WISC-R) as a screening device for students who are referred for possible special education placement. To determine the relationship between the two tests, Pearson product moment correlation…

Webster, Raymond E.; And Others – 1977
The diagnosis of children as learning disabled (LD) has become an increasingly popular diagnostic rubric, but the operational definition of "learning disabled" remains a vague, ill-defined construct which is based upon diagnosis by exclusion of other obvious causes. Diagnostic test results and cultural and familial information taken from case…

Christopher, James D.; And Others – 1986
A discriminant analysis was performed to ascertain what psycho-educational assessment variables made the greatest predictive contribution to the classification of high school students referred for Child Study Team evaluation. Thirty-nine students classified as learning disabled were compared to 47 classified as ineligible for special services.…

Bowers, Thomas G.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1992
This study examined the utility of Wechsler's Deterioration Index, which compares short- and long-term memory capabilities. Three studies with a total of 120 children (ages 6-14) found that the index did not predict learning disability status but did distinguish children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder from nondisabled children.…

Palmer, Douglas J.; And Others – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1989
A sample of 236 elementary-level Black, Hispanic, and Anglo pupils, referred or nonreferred for learning disabilities, were assessed with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised and the Kaufman-Assessment Battery for Children cognitive and achievement scales. Results showed that referral status, ethnicity, and language proficiency…

Hagin, Rosa A.; And Others – 1970
The WPPSI was used in a Manhattan, N.Y., public school because administrators, teachers, and parents had asked for help in understanding children who had difficulty in learning to read well, despite special efforts to help them. A preventive intervention program was begun based on a clinical study of every first grader. Forty children were…
