Prison inmates (n=72) were screened for scotopic sensitivity syndrome (SSS), a visual perceptual dysfunction; 11% had low levels of SSS, 18.1% moderate, and 79.8% high, compared with 12-14% of the general population. Ferri, Beth A.; Connor, David J.; Solis, Santiago; Valle, Jan; Volpitta, Donna – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2005
The purpose of this study is to examine how 4 teachers with learning disabilities (LD) negotiate multiple, complex, and sometimes contradictory discourses of disabilities in constructing their own understandings of LD. We chose to study teachers with LD because of their unique access to at least 3 different sources of knowledge about LD: (a)…

Stanovich, Keith E. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 2005
Imagine a current HMO that covered only the procedures and diseases recognized by the medical profession in 1950. The thought is ridiculous because in such a rapidly developing field as medicine, no one would expect practice to be frozen at the level of scientific knowledge attained 50 years ago. The author believes this is what has happened in…

Palincsar, Annemarie Sullivan – Learning Disabilities Research & Practice, 2005
In this response, I advocate for the value of considering theory in the design-based research that Gersten describes in Behind the Scenes of an Intervention Research Study. I argue that such an emphasis: is consistent with the literature on design experiments, is integral to advancing knowledge building within domains, serves to advance the work…
