In experiments with seven- to ten-year-old children, mismatched pictures increased learning of prose that was heard and prose that was read. Presence of pictures mismatched to prose they accompanied had little negative impact on cued recall. Twenty-seven references are provided. (Author)

Textbooks play a major role in influencing children's beliefs and attitudes about subjects. Textbook coverage of evolution is analyzed to demonstrate that textbooks could be responsible for implanting in children the distorted perception that science is infallible. (Author/IS)

Three psychometric methods for validating learning hierarchies were applied to one data set derived from student responses (N=269) to items representing skills in a hypothesized hierarchy for the mole concept. The hierarchy derived from the analysis was supported by a test for transfer of learning from subordinate to superordinate skills.…

Two experiments examined the effects of embedded and intact (outline) headings on the processing of complex text material by college students. Results indicated that embedded headings reliably improved delayed test performance. It was further found that instructions in the use of headings as processing aids facilitated test performance.
