It is argued that profound differences in the legal professions and factors affecting them in the United States and Japan make comparisons misleading and unfair. Reasons for the apparent disparity in numbers of lawyers, Japan's widespread use of unlicensed legal experts, and differences in quantity of litigation are examined. (MSE)
