America Needs an Education in Leisure. Foundational Concepts to Guide Politics and Policy. First Principles. No. 88
Cambre, Rachel Alexander
Heritage Foundation
This "First Principles" report begins with a brief assessment of the state of leisure in America today, before turning to the traditional understanding of the concept. In reconsidering the classical notion that leisure requires education, or, more radically, that the purpose of education is leisure, the report will focus especially on the American Founders and their understanding of education, liberty, and leisure as the culmination of both. How did the Founders' vision for education prepare students to exercise leisure, and can that vision still inspire Americans today?
