The Blessings of Liberty. User's Guide.
American Historical Association, Washington, DC.; Project '87, Washington, DC.; American Political Science Association, Washington, DC.
The story of the United States Constitution is told in 12 posters: "The Blessings of Liberty"; "The Articles of Confederation"; "A 'Less Perfect' Union, 1781-1788"; "The Constitutional Convention"; "The Founders' Achievement"; "The Anti-Federalist Argument"; "Ratification"; "The Bill of Rights"; "A City Plan for the Constitution"; "The Principle of Federalism"; "The Supreme Law of the Land"; and "To Ourselves and Our Posterity." This User's Guide features narrative essays which expand upon the subject of each of the posters. A variety of additional resources are provided to enable organizations to assist viewers in learning about the evolution of the Constitution: a chronology of dates marking important historical events connected to the Constitution; The Articles of Confederation, which preceded the Constitution as an instrument of governance; the Constitution itself (with amendments); and a basic bibliography of books about the Constitution for the general reader. Material is also provided for teaching about the Constitution on various educational levels. Three sets of lessons enable teachers to use the posters in their classroom. Additional lessons, with worksheets, are suitable for elementary, junior, and senior high school students. An essay on 18th-century constitutionalism can be used by teachers and adult participation groups. A final syllabus provides guidance for a formal series of seminars. (APG)
