The Jesuits of Chile initiated their first efforts in public library services by opening a collection of over 35,000 volumes to the public in downtown Santiago. This and other efforts of the Chilian Jesuits to supply much needed public library services are described. (NH)

Recommends that public libraries be aware of the need to develop basic preservation policies in order to safeguard local treasures and to extend the life of the collection as a whole.
