Determination of the Critical Concentration of Rapid Coagulation by the Dynamic Light Scattering Technique
Journal of Chemical Education, v102 n5 p2049-2056 2025
Colloidal stability is one of the most important criteria in the application strategy of colloidal nanoparticles in the continuous phase. The branches include ecology, involving coagulation as a purification method; medicine as nanocarriers; biology as blood coagulation, etc. A chemist versed in these concepts is a high-performing chemist in creating novel nanosystems and modifying water-insoluble ones. The laboratory experiment is designed to familiarize learners with state-of-the-art experimental techniques and advanced nanomaterials. Dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering techniques and nanotubes were successfully implemented for these lab purposes. The further distinctive feature is the integration of an inorganic electrolyte and ionic surfactant to investigate different coagulation mechanisms. Mastery of these techniques will greatly enhance the competitiveness of chemists and will also be eye-opening to learners of biology, biochemistry, ecology, and medicine. Given the complexity of concepts, this work is offered to upper-level and upper-division undergraduate students.
