Kunsmann, Peter W. – Neusprachliche Mitteilungen, 1975
That "will" and "shall" are modal, not temporal, verbs is shown by their syntactic similarity to the modals and by the fact that they follow the same transformational rules as the modals. This example demonstrates the usefulness of transformational grammar in explaining grammatical relationships to students. (Text is in…

Chvany, Catherine V. – Slavic and East European Journal, 1975

Allen, J. P. B., Ed.; Van Buren, Paul, Ed. – 1971
The aim of this collection of Noam Chomsky's writings over the past 12 years is to present the main outlines of transformational theory, using as far as possible Chomsky's own words, but arranged in such a way that a non-specialist will have no difficulty in following the text. The topics covered include syntax, phonology, semantics, and language…

Launer, Michael K. – Russian Language Journal, 1977
This paper examines the question of aspect in Russian, never fully mastered by the non-native speaker. Definitions are not found to be adequate pedagogical tools; the difficulty seems to stem from the notion of binariness. Perfectivity in verbs stems from the concurrence of two features, rather than a single criterion. (CHK)

Lee, D. A. – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1975
A comparison is made of two different approaches to the treatment of modals in the framework of a transformational grammar--that of Seuren, who analyzes modals as "operators," and that of the generative semanticists who take them to be "higher verbs." Implications for language teaching are discussed. (Author/RM)

Light, Timothy – Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association, 1977
This paper proposes that theoretical studies of the Chinese resultative construction can make it easier to teach and learn. Several varied linguistic approaches are necessary to the language teacher. Pedagogical analyses of data are valued when based on different relevant theoretical points, elucidating meaning, function, purpose and form of data.…

Kaplan, Robert B. – 1978
It is contended that there are such things as discourse blocs, and that they are composed of discourse units glued together into a contextuated whole by bloc signals. There are three kinds of structures with which it is necessary to deal in order to discuss coherent discourse: the discourse bloc, the discourse unit, and the bloc signal.…
