Mortureux, Marie-Francoise – Langages, 1974
The role of analogy in word formation is explored. (PMP)
Descriptors: Linguistic Theory, Morphology (Languages), Structural Analysis, Syntax
HUDSON, R.A. – 1967
TWO WAYS OF DESCRIBING CLAUSES IN ENGLISH ARE DISCUSSED IN THIS PAPER. THE FIRST, TERMED THE "FEW-IC'S" APPROACH, IS A SEGMENTATION OF THE CLAUSE INTO A SMALL NUMBER OF IMMEDIATE CONSTITUENTS WHICH REQUIRE A LARGE NUMBER OF FURTHER SEGMENTATIONS BEFORE THE ULTIMATE CONSTITUENTS ARE REACHED. THE SECOND, "MANY-IC'S" APPROACH, IS A SEGMENTATION INTO…

Ingram, Robert M. – Sign Language Studies, 1978
The syntax of lexical units, or signs, of American Sign Language (ASL) is analyzed. Previous areas of study concerning pauses, functional sentence perspective, theme and rheme, and topic and comment are discussed. A model is offered to depict topic-comment relationships in ASL using space, vectors, and relationship rules. (SW)
Descriptors: Language Patterns, Linguistic Theory, Manual Communication, Sign Language

Lehrer, Adrienne – Journal of Linguistics, 1975
Argues that Charles Morris' division of signs into syntactics, semantics and pragmatics is too rigid. The line between pragmatics and semantics is not sharp, and a language theory is needed that can predict and explain borderline cases without forcing them into arbitrary established categories. (CHK)
Descriptors: Adverbs, Descriptive Linguistics, Language Classification, Linguistic Theory
Reich, Peter A. – 1968
This paper discusses an alternate formalism for context-free phrase structure grammar. The author feels that if a grammar is stated completely explicitly it can be represented in the form of a relational network of the type proposed by Lamb. He discusses some formal properties of such networks and makes some revisions to Lamb's formulation which…

Pinchon, Jacqueline – Francais dans le Monde, 1977
Presents two systems of word derivation. (Text is in French.) (AM)

Norman, Linda Schwartz; Sanders, Gerald A. – Glossa, 1977
Roots of Spanish verbs exhibit systematic vowel alternations. In traditional accounts of these alternations, the mid simplex nuclei are assumed to be basic, with complex nuclei being derived from them by rule. This paper suggests an alternative analysis assuming that the complex nuclei are more basic than the simplex ones. (CHK)

Heny, Frank W. – College English, 1972
This book is an attempt to argue that transformational grammar, as a theory of language, is misconceived. (Author)
Descriptors: Book Reviews, Linguistic Theory, Semantics, Structural Analysis

Byrne, Brian – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
In open-ended and forced-choice situations, subjects were asked to interpret phrases containing superficially incompatible adjective pairs. The results demonstrate that English speakers implicitly understand proposed linguistic principles underlying prenominal adjective ordering. (SW)

Lakoff, George – 1968
The author feels that although the problem of pronominalization and of reference in general is at the very heart of syntactic investigation, transformational grammarians are unable to deal adequately with these problems. He finds their theory of referential indices (Chomsky, "Aspects of the Theory of Syntax") "completely beyond…

Babcock, Sandra Scharff – 1969
The author begins this paper with, "Let us recognize as axiomatic the statement that sentences in natural languages have the properties of structured, organic wholes." She feels that this statement has several important theoretical consequences, the most interesting (in so far as the current controversy over "surfacism" is…

Gamkrelidze, Thomas V. – Language, 1974
The Saussurean thesis of arbitrariness of the sign is considered incomplete since it specifies only vertical and not horizontal relations. (DD)
