A Two-Way Multivariate Analysis of Variance Examination of Summer Learning Academies and the Associated Effects on Student Academic Proficiency and Growth

This study examined one school district's attempt to accelerate the academic learning of a population of incoming kindergarten students through the students' participation in a pilot summer incoming-kindergarten intervention program known as Summer Learning Academies (SLA). The analyses examined the end-of-year (EOY) reading and mathematics proficiency and growth scale score levels during the study population's kindergarten year. Student proficiency and growth levels were determined using a computer adaptive assessment software system known as i-Ready. Two-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) analyses were used to examine the student results. While a majority of the two-way MANOVA analyses indicated that the overall effects of the SLA program and its interaction effects on specific demographic groups were not statistically significant, seven of the outcomes indicated a statistically significant positive interaction effect of the SLA intervention program. The reading and mathematics growth results for Caucasian, ELL, and Hispanic students in the SLA program all had higher mean growth scores than the comparison group. Additionally the mean mathematics EOY proficiency levels for Caucasian students in the SLA intervention were also higher than the comparison group. Conversely, four of the two-way MANOVA outcomes indicated statistically significantly higher mean scores in the comparison group instead of the intervention group including the reading and mathematics growth levels for the overall SLA participation, as well as the mathematics EOY proficiency level and growth score of African-American/Black students in the SLA intervention program. While the analyses produced a number of statistically significant positive outcomes, the comparison group did show higher mean scale scores in certain statistically significant results. Given the variance of the analyses and the limited generalizability of the findings, the researcher recommends that additional paths of research be considered for further study.
